About Waller Junior High
Image

Waller Junior High provides a myriad of opportunities to meet the academic, physical, and social needs of the junior high school student. We exist to serve students in grades six through eight in a successful transition from elementary to high school during this metamorphic time in their lives.

With a strong focus on academics, WJH has been Recognized by the Texas Education Agency, named a Higher Performing School by NCEA (National Center for Educational Achievement), and was selected one of 50 schools across the nation to be a charter member of the National Learning School Alliance. Teachers work collaboratively, in department and grade level teams, to create and deliver engaging, high-quality lessons to students in the core areas of English Language Arts/Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies. High school credit classes are offered to students in Foreign Language, Fine Arts, and Technology. Beyond the classroom, Waller Junior High students enthusiastically participate in extracurricular activities in sports, music, theatre, art, and academics.

Extracurricular sports opportunities abound at WJH, home to spirited football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, track, cross country, tennis, and golf teams. Bulldogs have left their mark on the gridiron and the courts, notably Bulldog Boys earned a 2nd place standing in district basketball. The 2012 7th Grade Boys Soccer Team was undefeated for a Perfect Season record. The award-winning WJH Competition Cheer Team most recently won 1st place in 3 of 4 competitions.

Fine arts provide many exciting extracurricular moments for students. Waller Junior High bands are legendary, bringing home a Sweepstakes Award from the UIL judges for earning a Superior rating of “1” in both Concert and Sight reading performance competitions. WJH Choirs also shine in UIL Contests, earning a rating of Excellent in the most recent competition and performing well at Solo and Ensemble contests. Waller Junior High School art students represent our school at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest, with several finalists bringing home awards including a coveted HLSR Gold Medal. WJH theatre students deliver polished performances at the District One Act Play competition and other entertaining productions throughout the year.

Away from the court, fields, and stage, Bulldogs also compete well in UIL academic meets, taking pride in representing our school with a large contingent of students entering the district competition and bringing medals and ribbons back to Waller Junior High School. Students in the Gifted and Talented program are guided and encouraged to collaborate with a mentor in an advanced Independent Study Project, a proud WJH tradition. Our National Junior Honor Society promotes excellence in scholarly pursuits and character. To promote College Readiness, WJH 8th grade students visit a local college. ACE, our 21st Century Afterschool Center, was recently awarded the Golden ACE Regional Prime Award, recognizing outstanding academic enrichment and tutoring support offered to our students and their families through afterschool programs.

Social Skills, another essential part of a junior high student’s education, are addressed through Seven Habits of Effective Teens, Girls’ Club, meetings with the School Resource Officer, and Red Ribbon/Drug Awareness and Anti-Bullying events. Our active Student Council helps host dances and other WJH special events. They also spearhead several Community Service projects throughout the year. The Bulldog spirit is alive in Bulldog Clubs, as students meet with club advisors across campus in high-interest clubs of their choosing.

Waller Junior High School is a good place to be. Together, we build stronger scholars- socially, physically, and intellectually- and instill in our students the competence, confidence, and independence necessary to succeed in future endeavors.
