Students will gain a better understanding of mathematics as they solve problems, reason mathematically, prove mathematical relationships, participate in mathematical conversation, make mathematical connections, and model and represent mathematical ideas in a variety of ways. Each student should strive to become an independent thinker.  At each grade level, the importance of math will be stressed and made relevant to students by exposing them to real life application.

6th Grade math
In sixth grade, students begin developing their understanding of proportional relationships by writing ratios and using ratios to make predictions in given situations. They also begin working with different representations of rational numbers by learning to create equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents. They will expand their knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions and decimals. They examine the concept of circumference, as well as perimeter, and area. They are expected to analyze, display, and interpret data, using a variety of graphical and statistical methods. They find the probability of events and analyze numerical and geometric patterns. Students also develop an understanding of algebraic terms and write simple algebraic equations from tables.


7th Grade Math
In seventh grade, students complete their development of the rational number system with the inclusion of negative decimals and fractions. Fluency of all operations on non-negative rational numbers is expected of students, as is proficiency with addition and subtraction of all rational numbers. They solve multi-step equations. The student understands that the way a set of data is displayed influences its interpretation. 

8th Grade Math

In eighth grade, students are proficient in computation with all rational numbers and use proportions to solve a variety of problems. They recognize three-dimensional shapes represented in two-dimensional drawings and apply transformations to geometric shapes in the coordinate plane. They calculate the unknown length of a side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem. Students are able to correctly transition between multiple representations of data and determine proportionality of a relationship.
